In 2015, Lime* was entrusted with a formidable and inspiring assignment: to chronicle the creation of the Xiqu Centre, a landmark opera house destined to grace the vibrant heart of Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District. Recognizing the magnitude of this cultural and architectural project, our crew embarked on an ambitious journey that would stretch over three years, meticulously documenting the evolution of this soon-to-be iconic institution from concept to completion.
From the outset, it was clear that the Xiqu Centre would become a symbol not only of artistic excellence but also of cutting-edge engineering and design. Every stage of the process revealed the passion and determination of a dedicated team striving to bring an award-winning vision to life. Over the course of those three years, our cameras were omnipresent—capturing not just the physical progression of construction, but also the intangible spirit of creativity and collaboration that permeated the site. We bore witness to the fusion of tradition and innovation as the centre’s unique architectural elements, inspired by Chinese culture and opera, took tangible form under the hands of skilled artisans and engineers.
Among the many memorable moments was our interview with the project’s lead architect, Bin Thom. His profound dedication to the project and his deep understanding of the cultural significance of the Xiqu Centre left a lasting impression on all of us. Tragically, Bin Thom passed away only a couple of weeks after sharing his insights and dreams with us on camera. His untimely departure cast a shadow of sadness over our project, but it also imbued our film with a greater sense of purpose. We knew, from that moment on, that this documentary would be a tribute—not only to the building, but also to the brilliant mind who helped shape it. Accordingly, we dedicate this work to Bin Thom’s memory, honoring his lasting contribution to the cultural landscape of Hong Kong.
The final film presents a story-driven narrative that reveals the intricate process of transforming an internationally acclaimed design into one of the world’s most distinguished performance spaces. It delves into the complexities and triumphs encountered along the way, highlighting the perseverance of those who refused to be daunted by the sheer scale of the enterprise.
