Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital - 100th Anniversary

The Brief

To commemorate the centenary of Hong Kong Hospital and Sanatorium, a video was developed to document the institution's century-long development. The project aimed to provide a factual account of the hospital’s progress in healthcare, describing key historical events and contributions made by staff over the years.

Research for the video included reviewing archives such as stories, photographs, and records that outlined the hospital’s progression from its early years to its present status as a medical institution in Hong Kong. Interviews with staff, patients, and family members provided context and accounts of the hospital’s activities, advancements, and commitment to medical practice. These interviews contributed to the structure and content of the film.

To present a comprehensive view of the hospital, the video was designed to feature all departments. Nursing, surgical, research, and administrative teams shared their perspectives on what a century of service has represented for both staff and the community.

The Result

The approach focused on presenting firsthand testimony. Individuals spoke directly to the camera, offering descriptions in their own words, aiming to provide viewers with clear insights into the hospital environment.

Pre-production involved coordinating interviews, identifying various locations within the hospital, and planning with department heads to avoid disrupting regular operations. Choices for lighting and cinematography were selected to achieve a clean and bright aesthetic. Filming locations included historical corridors, operating theatres, gardens, and patient rooms.

Filming occurred over five days, working with representatives from all departments to gather stories and perspectives. The production used Sony FX6 cameras and gimbal work with autofocus on Sony Alpha, selecting equipment and settings to achieve a clinical appearance in the video.
