Herman Miller- Activity Chair

Herman Miller Hong Kong Designer Video: Project

Overview

Highlighting Creativity and Subtle Design Integration

THE BRIEF

Herman Miller, celebrated globally as a trailblazer in the realm of office furniture design, has long been synonymous with innovation, style, and ergonomic excellence. In their ongoing mission to reach a wider audience, they introduced an “activity” chair—an affordable yet meticulously designed piece aimed at budget-conscious members of the arts and design community. Seeking to capture the chair’s understated role in the creative process while celebrating the spirit of innovation, Herman Miller commissioned a global video series. One key installment would be filmed in Hong Kong, a city renowned for its dynamic design culture. They approached our team to conceptualize and produce this segment, with the goal of spotlighting a local designer through a personality-driven profile in which the activity chair would appear as a supporting character rather than the main focus.

THE RESULT

Herman Miller’s clientele are invariably innovative thinkers, trailblazers, and individuals who embrace new ideas—qualities that mirror the essence of the brand itself. For the Hong Kong segment, we chose to feature Alexis, a Swedish designer whose creative journey led him to establish his own shop in the vibrant Star Street district. Alexis embodies the international, boundary-pushing spirit that Herman Miller champions. Throughout the filming process, Alexis shared insight into his life, inspirations, and philosophy of design, offering viewers an authentic glimpse into his creative world.

The resulting video artfully weaves together Alexis’s story with atmospheric visuals of his shop and the Hong Kong urban landscape. The activity chair, though present, is never the centerpiece. Instead, it quietly integrates into the designer’s workspace and daily routine, highlighting its versatility and functional elegance without resorting to overt marketing. This subtle approach reflects Herman Miller’s faith in their products’ inherent value and the sophistication of their audience.
Ultimately, the video stands alone as a compelling personality profile—precisely aligning with Herman Miller’s desire for content that inspires rather than simply sells. The project captures both the unique energy of Hong Kong’s design community and the understated excellence of Herman Miller’s latest product, demonstrating that, sometimes, the best way to showcase great design is to let it naturally become part of a larger story.
